United Way App and Website Launched

The United Way announced its latest campaign total using a new mobile enhanced website and app during a coffee social and media announcement on November 4, 2014.  Participants were invited to check the thermometer on their mobile devices to get a real-time update on the Community Campaign.  With just under two weeks to go, the total jumped from 51-percent to over 85-percent, or $6.8 million raised to date.

“This is an exciting day for us,” said Diane Shannon, Executive Director.  “We have made huge progress on the campaign and we have new tools to make connecting with the United Way easier than ever before.”

The United Way of Fort McMurray app is available for download on Blackberry and Android devices through their app stores. The United Way is still in process of getting the app approved for Apple devices. A new website was also launched, designed to provide a user-friendly mobile user experience.

“We want mobile visitors to our website to have a seamless experience,” said Russell Thomas, Director of Communications and Community Impact.  “If people visit our website using the web browser on their mobile device, they are going to have an experience very similar to our app users.”

Launched with two weeks to go in the annual Community Campaign, the app and new website will add momentum to the effort to reach the campaign target of $8 million.

“These communication tools are the next step in our journey to better share the impact stories of our member agencies and the importance of the annual Community Campaign,” said Shannon.  “People can quickly and easily be a part of the CHANGE STARTS HERE movement by learning about the United Way, getting an answer to a frequently asked question, or making a donation.”

Paul McWilliams, Community Branch Manager with Servus Credit Union was on hand to announce a special incentive to download the United Way app or visit the new website.  All visitors will have an opportunity to enter a special contest.

“If you are the winner of the random draw, we will proudly donate $1,000 to the United Way member agency of your choice,” he said.  “Or, alternatively, you can choose to have the funds go toward the Community Fund.”

People are encouraged to download the app or visit the mobile enhanced website, click BLOG, and enter the draw by 4 pm on Friday, November 14.  To download the app, search United Way of Fort McMurray in the Google Play or Blackberry app stores, or visit www.fmunitedway.com.
