Stu Marchand wins songwriting contest

Stu Marchand’s composition and performance of “Change Starts Here” garnered the most votes from VIPs (Volunteers Inspiring People) attending the United Way’s Red Carpet Reception held at the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre on November 18. Marchand has won an audio recording package from Campbell’s Music and Samson Audio. His song will also be made into a music video produced by DK Films that will help generate excitement and awareness about the 2015 United Way Community Campaign.

“We enjoyed three very strong performances last night,” said Diane Shannon, Executive Director. “We are so honoured by the effort that these talented artists put into their songs.”

With the chorus of “change can make a difference and the change starts here”, Marchand tapped into his direct experience with the Community Campaign to craft the award-winning composition.

“The inspiration for this song came to me at a time when we were running our United Way campaign at work,” said Marchand who works at Shell Albian Sands as a heavy duty mechanic. “We had a lot of fun with the campaign and my shift alone raised over $17,000. I was floored how generous everyone was and how almost everyone had a United Way story.”

“To me the United Way is so important because I’ve seen firsthand growing up, family and friends that had fallen on hard times, had no support, and were left to deal with awful things on their own.”

Also performing at the VIP Red Carpet Reception were Dave Martin with Sean Semper-Whyte on video (in collaboration with Dianne Pare and Dan Gillies) and a trio consisting of Tanner Chubb, Ruan Bouwer and Dylan Thomas-Bouchier.

“Last night was a great experience performing in front of the full house,” said Marchand. “This is a song I want people to hear.”

The “Change Starts Here” songwriting contest was sponsored by Campbell’s Music, Samson Audio, and DK Films.

Change Starts Here

Lyrics by Stu Marchand

change is the colour of the leaves in the fall
change is what the pitcher throws on a ball
change is in my pocket and its a word people fear
but change can make a difference and the change starts here

there’s changing in the weather
there’s changing of the gears
there’s the changing of the guards
and there’s changing of the years
change is always different and is a word that people fear
but change can make a difference and the change starts here

looking out for one another gives the biggest sense of pride
helping all those folks out who can’t afford the ride
if we put our hearts behind it spread some wealth and spread some cheer
change can make a difference and the change starts here

change is winter to spring change is summer to fall
change is day to night change to short to tall
change is in my wallet and its a word people fear
but change can make a difference and the change starts here

there’s changing out a lightbulb
there’s changing guitar strings
there’s changing of the lanes
there’s exchanging of the rings
change is always different and is a word that people fear
but change can make a difference and the change starts here

looking out for one another gives the biggest sense of pride
helping all those folks out who can’t afford the ride
if we put our hearts behind it spread some wealth and spread some cheer
change can make a difference and the change starts here

change can make a difference and the change starts here
change can make a difference and the change starts here.
