Community building takes on a whole new meaning

Next Wednesday would have been our annual Community Building Awards. We were all set to honour the many people and organizations who have supported The United Way of Fort McMurray as donors and volunteers. While this event is postponed owing to the evacuation of our community, we will be honouring the amazing supporters in a way, and at a time, that is appropriate to do so. There are still many unknowns regarding re-entry, recovery and rebuilding. The fire is still very active and many things need to happen for our community to be deemed safe. Hundreds of talented and dedicated men and women are doing their best to get us home as soon as possible.

The idea of “community building” has taken on a whole new meaning in light of the unpredictable and fiery “Beast” that has displaced us all. While our staff, board and volunteers are scattered across the country, we are working together and with our United Way colleagues from other jurisdictions and with companies, foundations and the Canadian Red Cross to be ready for the heavy lifting that lies ahead to rebuild our social infrastructure. With your help and support, we will be ready to hit the ground running and support the many agencies who will be providing human care in the weeks, months and years to come.

If you want to help us rebuild, consider supporting the United For Fort McMurray campaign. Donations to The United Way of Fort McMurray are being accepted at www.unitedforfortmcmurray.ca.
