CBAs celebrate donors and champions

The United Way of Fort McMurray presented its Community Building Awards at a reception held last night at Shell Place. It was an evening to thank individual and family donors, workplace campaigns and corporations.

“Our donors are foundational to everything we do as an organization,” said Tony Mankowski, President of the Board of Directors of The United Way of Fort McMurray. “Many people worked together to meet community needs.”

Over 5,000 donors combined to raise approximately $6.3 million in the 2016 Community Campaign.

“This campaign was about a community coming together to take care of each another,” said Colin Hartigan, Community Campaign Chair. “Those who gave, gave more, and those who weren’t in a position to give, gave of their time.”

A number of special awards were given out recognizing United Way champions. The Pillar Award winner, for putting herself front and centre during the campaign, was Suncor volunteer Samara Sullivan. Wanda Power of Syncrude was the recipient of the Cornerstone Award for her unwavering dedication and leadership. The winner of the Blueprint Award was Jonathan Wright, for his efforts in getting a local Pembina Pipeline campaign off the ground in 2016. The Maryanne Warren Foundation Award went to the Salvation Army, a valued agency partner who has been helping people move from poverty to possibility for decades. Cathy Steeves and Cayley Tkach received the Groundbreaker Award for their focus on education and understanding during the Shell Albian Sands workplace campaign.

Additionally, Syncrude Canada Ltd. was presented with the President’s Award for the corporation with over 1,000 employees locally which attained the highest employee participation in 2016.

Special awards were also presented for the 2015 Campaign as the Community Building Awards were cancelled last year owing to the fire and evacuation. Winners included Dave Evoy from Syncrude (Pillar Award), Jen Reid from Shell Albian Sands (Cornerstone Award), Kimberley Snow and Sonya Earle from the RMWB (Blueprint Award), Tracey Carnochan (Maryanne Warren Foundation Award), Skimmin’ the Surface Cardboard Boat Race (Groundbreaker Award) and Suncor Energy (President’s Award).
