As the final workplace campaigns come to an end and more fundraising totals get reported, the Community Campaign goal of meeting community needs remains in sharp focus.
“With the extraordinary total announced by Shell Albian Sands last week, we have come within 15-percent of our target,” said Marty Giles, 2015 Community Campaign Chair. “To be at 85-percent with more money yet to come in is a great place to be heading into the holiday season.”
The campaign to replenish the community fund began on September 9th with a kick-off breakfast and ran for 10 weeks through the fall involving dozens of companies and hundreds of volunteers.
“This campaign is a reflection of the times and the community we serve,” said Giles. “This has been a tough year for a lot of companies and people. But in true Fort McMurray spirit, individuals with the capacity to give, did so with enthusiasm and heart.”
Suncor, Syncrude and Shell all came very close to reaching record giving amounts, despite the challenges of a low oil price environment.
“So much credit needs to go the workplace campaign chairs, co-chairs, canvassers and volunteers,” said Giles. “These folks went above and beyond to help us be in as good a position as possible to meet the increasing resource needs of our member agencies. We are incredibly proud and grateful for their efforts.”
Hundreds of volunteers working with organizations and companies throughout the region have inspired individual and corporate giving, organized fundraising events and raised awareness about the United Way. Donations will continue to get added to the campaign total until December 31st with a final total to be announced early in January.
“The resilience of this community is something to be proud of,” shared Diane Shannon, Executive Director, The United Way of Fort McMurray. “We would encourage residents to consider the United Way as part of their giving plans this holiday season. It’s never too late to donate to the community fund. The needs are greater than ever before and every contribution helps.”
Donations will be graciously accepted at the United Way offices located at The Redpoll Centre at Shell Place or online at www.fmunitedway.com.
