The United Way Community Campaign began just over four weeks ago and the first significant total has been announced.
“We are thrilled to share that the campaign is gaining momentum,” said Diane Shannon, Executive Director. “Our preliminary numbers indicate that we have already raised 23-percent of our goal. As we head into this Thanksgiving weekend we are so grateful for the generosity that is being shown, even during tougher economic times.”
With an emphasis on meeting community needs, thousands of campaign volunteers are engaging work colleagues and citizens about the purpose of United Way. The recent announcement that agency funding requests have reached an all-time high will go a long way to inspire giving.
“Every year is different in terms of when the donations come in,” said Shannon. “Workplace campaigns happen at different times throughout the campaign, with the larger campaigns reporting toward the end of the campaign period. We are close to where we were last year at this time, which is good news.”
High profile events like the President’s Cup hockey game and KD Gala are coming up in the next few weeks and myriad fundraising activities are planned at workplaces throughout the region. Additionally, volunteer canvassers are encouraging one-time and payroll deduction pledges.
“We are really trying to focus our efforts in communicating the needs that exist in the community right now,” said Ben Dutton, President of The United Way of Fort McMurray Board of Directors. “Wood Buffalo has traditionally risen to the challenges that it faces. This is a time when we all need to come together to ensure that our agencies are ready to help children, youth, adults and families.”
