Talent Search focuses on the gift in the giving

We’re breaking new ground with the first ever United Way Family Day on September 30th from 11 am to 3 pm. It’s something completely new to us: bringing the community together in the middle of the annual campaign. The Nexen Activity Field House at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre on MacDonald Island will come alive with bouncy castles, face painters, a balloon artist, and photo booth. Plus, all 31 of our partner agencies will be represented in the agency showcase and scavenger hunt.

Visitors will be encouraged to go from agency to agency, learning about the impact they make in our community. It’s a chance to get in a draw for a fabulous prize and meet some amazing agencies and people.

We are also hosting something that we’re calling “The Gift in the Giving” Talent Search. Why are we calling it that? Simple. Children and youth will be competing for personal cash prizes and the opportunity to present a donation, provided by sponsors, to the Community Campaign. There is a great joy in giving, and our winners be a part of our determination to meet community needs.

Children and youth of school age (17 and under) can register to perform at talent. Whether they sing, dance, act or do magic, we would love to see them shine during United Way Family Day. The first step in the registration process is to click on the following link and sign up.

We will be selecting individuals and groups to perform based on a number of different factors, including technical requirements and space availability. We hope to let everyone know about their performance status on or about September 26th, which will leave a few more days for preparations.

A panel of celebrity judges will be on hand during the Talent Search, providing feedback and encouragement. They will also be tasked with picking the top three finishers.

All participants will be encouraged to visit the Agency Showcase and play the Scavenger Hunt game. Why? Because if they happen to win, our emcee is going to ask them a few questions about what they learned. They will also be given a cheque by a sponsor to present to Steve Yataura, Community Campaign Chair. The donation will be made to the campaign in their honour, celebrating their talent.

This is a chance for youth to win some cash – a great incentive at any age, and showcase their skills in whatever performance discipline they enjoy.

Good luck!
